Set across multiple continents, Invasion follows an alien invasion through different perspectives around the world. Earth is visited by an alien species that threatens humanity’s existence. Events unfold in real-time through the eyes of five ordinary people across the globe as they struggle to make sense of the chaos unraveling around them.

The series is being led by: Shamier Anderson (BruisedAwake) as Trevante Ward, a soldier stationed in Afghanistan; Golshifteh Farahani (ExtractionBody of Lies) as Aneesha Malik, a first-generation Syrian immigrant, wife, and mother living in Long Island.; Sam Neill (Jurassic World: Dominion) as Sheriff John Bell Tyson, a weathered rural lawman on the verge of retirement; Firas Nassar (Fauda) as Ahmed Malik, Aneesha’s husband and a successful businessman; and Shioli Kutsuna (Deadpool 2) as Mitsuki, an intelligent member of Japan’s JASA mission control.

Invasion is created, written, and executive produced by Simon Kinberg (Dark Phoenix) and David Weil (Hunters). Executive producers are Audrey Chon, Amy Kaufman, Elisa Ellis, Andrew Baldwin, Katie O’Connell, and Jakob Verbruggen, who also directed multiple episodes of the series. There’s no denying the fact that on a scale of scarily apocalyptic things that can happen, alien invasions are right up there.

They are epic, worldwide and unmissable and as films like Independence Day and War of the Worlds have made clear, entirely big, bombastic and huge.

But what’s lost in all the destructive noise and tumult is that real people are caught up in this sort of cataclysmic event which is why shows like Invasion are welcome because they take us deep down into the intimate effects of people who are all struggling to reconcile this unprecedented world-changing event with the small “l” circumstances of their lives.

For all the criticism it rather unfairly received, Signs managed to convey this beautifully and with taut emotional power and this new 10-part series might be capable of doing the same and give us a refreshingly fresh perspective on what it means to have your whole world end when aliens come unexpectedly a-calling.

Invasion premiers on Apple TV+ on 22 October 2021.
