Glow tells the fictional story of Ruth Wilder (Brie), an out-of-work, struggling actress in 1980s Los Angeles who finds one last chance for stardom when she’s thrust into the glitter and spandex world of women’s wrestling. In addition to working with 12 Hollywood misfits, Ruth also has to compete with Debbie Eagan (Betty Gilpin) a former soap actress who left the business to have a baby, only to be sucked back into work when her picture perfect life is not what it seems. And at the wheel is Sam Sylvia (Marc Maron), a washed-up, B-movie director who now must lead this group of women on the journey to wrestling stardom. (synopsis via Coming Soon)

So what’s a girl to do when her dream of being an actress in 1980s L.A., a town not short of thespian aspirants, isn’t quite panning out as expected.

Why you join a women’s wrestling league which, it won’t surprise you to learn, is less about the sport and more about the theatrics and acting.

It’s an accidental career move that Ruth Wilder doesn’t so much choose as fall into, and it comes with a welter of weird, strange outcomes which makes for great drama.

At least that’s what creators Liz Flahive (Homeland, Nurse Jackie) and Carly Mensch (Nurse Jackie, Orange Is The New Black, Weeds) thought and Glow looks likes being another interesting, standout Netflix series that dares to have some fun with the period its set in and the motley crew that populate it.

Glow premieres on Netflix on 23 June.
