The Doctor is back, or forward, or he never really never left at all – you know how time travel is – in the full length Doctor Who trailer just released at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC).

It’s full to bursting with slivers of action and characters we have to know to love, know and fear in equal measure such as the Daleks, the Zygons, a suitably manic Missy, Vikings on a spaceship (the dinosaurs apparently have been booted off), Maisie Williams from Game of Thrones (who will apparently play “metamorphic roles on season 9), and of course, Clara and the Doctor, who seems inordinately raptured with the idea of kissing everything to death.

That could make for one very interesting episode!

As is the case with many trailers for TV shows these days, there’s a whole lot of stuff going on with not a huge amount of deal of detail, all part of the entice-and-attract strategy that’s needed to get people to watch a show in this age of televisual plenty.

And frankly it works a treat, with the spirit of the show the thing in lieu of actual details, the emphasis quite firmly, as Peter Capaldi, who plays the current incarnation of the Doctor noted during the show’s panel at #SDCC, channelling the idea that it’s a big exciting universe out there, full of danger and excitement in equal measure:

“He thinks that at even two and a half thousand years old, life is short. The universe is fabulous. You should explore it and have fun. He and Clara are a gang of two, running towards adventure.”

It’s an idea back up by Jenna Coleman who plays Clara:

“Since she’s lost Danny [Pink], she’s cut her ties to Earth. There’s freedom and an adrenaline-seeking high she’s running towards. A lot more seizing the moment … their relationship is solid. They’re both reckless, having the time of their lives in the TARDIS, nothing to lose — seemingly.”

Of course nothing, not even the eternal possibilities of time travel last forever and thus there is some darkness ahead for both of them, notes Capaldi:

“He knows things about Clara’s future that even she doesn’t know. That’s informed his decision to try and stay with her. The universe is very dark, and inevitably the darkness is where he’ll end up.”

So there you have it – fun, adventure, the kissing of everything, darkness and Daleks – pretty everything a time lord-travelling aficionado could possibly want.
