“According to showrunner Prentice Penny, the final season hinges on one question: ‘If life doesn’t look like how you imagined it, does that mean it’s a success or a failure?’ He spoke to Entertainment Weekly about what that means and how it should carry into Season 5, and it builds upon just about every one of the developments from that jaw-dropping finale.

While Issa and Molly attempted to talk things out after their relationship took a hit when they each tried to focus on their own lives, their friendship isn’t necessarily going to be back to normal. Penny said, “We don’t want them to go back to where they were. They’re going to be forever changed by this, forever humbled by this, and hopefully, forever close by this.” He explained that the new episodes will explore what the road back to their close friendship, and ultimately the “2.0 version” of it, will look like.” (synopsis (c) Thrillist)

Season 4 spoilers ahead …

When we left Issa Dee (played by Insecure co-creator Issa Rae) at the end of season 4 – which by the way took place mid-2020 so a while back now – old-now-new boyfriend Lawrence (Jay Ellis) had just broken the news that he is expecting a baby with ex Condola (Christina Elmore) who’s made it clear “she doesn’t expect anything from Lawrence and she doesn’t want him to feel trapped.” (Black Girl Nerds)

That is a BIG announcement and it makes all the grand plans Issa had to maybe possibly join Lawrence in his new job in San Francisco look a whole lot more shaky though the two confirmed to each other they remained committed to their old-new relationship.

What a way to end a season – though thankfully we also saw Issa and Molly (Yvonne Orji) renew their friendship so it wasn’t all bad thankfully – and naturally what a cool way to kick off season 5 which is the final season of what has turned out to be a cleverly-written, emotionally resonant and character-rich show.

It will be sad to see it go but it appears it was all planned to end this way and this soon – according to Thrillist “executive vice president of HBO Programming Amy Gravitt told Variety [in January 2021] ‘this talented team has conceived a brilliant final season.'” – which means we are going to be in that privileged position of seeing a story end the way its creator and stars wants it to, and that’s always a good thing.

So, it will be goodbye to Issa but hopefully with her in a much better place and ready to take on the world which you just know is going to be all the better for getting her proverbial together and doing all the great things she has planned and is more than capable of accomplishing.

Insecure season 5 debuts 24 October on HBO.
