Blue Planet III is a forthcoming British nature documentary series co-produced by the BBC Natural History Unit, ZDF, France Télévisions, and Skai TV in partnership with The Open University.

[With David Attenborough returning as narrator] Blue Planet III will have six hour-long episodes, with filming taking four years. The first five episodes will each focus on a different underwater habitat, and are titled “Tropical Seas”, “Open Ocean”, “Seasonal Seas”, “Polar Waters” and “The Deep”. The final episode, “Future Seas”, will explore themes of marine conservation. (courtesy Wikipedia)

There are two great gifts that anyone with an empathetically beating heart and a love for documentaries has received this yearm, and for which we should endlessly and fulsomely grateful.

First, Sir David Attenborough is still hale and hearty in his centenary year and secondly, that he has been able to narrate a third series of Blue Planet, the ground-breaking doco series that first brought the majesty and the beauty of our oceans to our attention back in 2001 (it was followed by Blue Planet II in 2017).

No one it seems is more surprised or pleased than the great man himself, who had this to say via a BBC news story:

“When I narrated the first Blue Planet series, it didn’t occur to me that I would be narrating a third series in my centennial year.”

And he’s promising a magically revelatory journey indeed.

In the newly released extended trailer, Attenborough promised to “venture even further” than ever before, describing the ocean as “an endlessly fascinating place”.

“We will uncover life that is more surprising, more intelligent, and even more precious than we ever realised,” he said.

“We will discover the extraordinary relationship we have with the ocean. One that has never been more important to understand.”

With the planet facing innumerable ecological challenges, the timing of the series is vitally important, if only to remind how special and unique the oceans are and how we must treasure and preserve them rather see them as a resource to be used and abused until they are no more.

Blue Planet III premieres later this year on BBC in UK and in Australia on Channel 9.
