Sonic Bliss #2: My favourite songs of the week

Five more favourite songs already? Just a week after the first lot?

Yes I say! Did you not pay attention to the last post? I am new music junkie, and with the vast eclectic range of artists I follow, it’s is frighteningly easy (in a very good way) to come up with five new wonderful songs.

So enjoy the latest pieces of sonic bliss to grace my iPod…

(1) “Perfect World”- Gossip

Perfect World - Gossip

They may not be the intense goth punk rockers of their early years anymore, but they still pack a musical punch. “Perfect World” is the lead single from their forthcoming new album, A Joyful Noise, and it is a slice of delicious power pop that employed Beth Ditto’s formidably emotive voice to stunning effect.

(2) “The Wave” – Miike Snow

Who said video clips had to make any sense at all? And even if someone did, swedish pop group Miike Snow (yes more perfect Scandipop music) would have ignored them and released a clip every bit as oddball as the one for this catchy piece of jaunty pop electronica. If you like hot bodied men in leather pants, spaceship and running through deserts, you’ll love the clip, but I daresay it’s the shiny bright joy of the song that will stick with you longer.

(3) “Express Yourself” – Diplo (feat. Nicky Da B)

Diplo

This is a raw piece of enormously funky danceable electronica known as New Orleans bounce (frantic full speed ahead hip-hop with melody to spare) and in the words of Michael Cragg of The Guardian newspaper, “it sounds like a panic attack set to music”. A very catchy panic attack at that with more shaking booties than a Beyonce video. The people in the clip know how to shake their booty and Diplo knows how to make experimental music that grabs you hard and won’t let you go.

(On a personal note, Diplo’s music was the soundtrack to my coming out year so he will always have a soft spot for him. Having said that, this is a damn fine piece of music no matter how you feel about the artist.)

(4) “Put Me To Sleep” – Porcelain Raft

Porcelain Raft

Breathy airy vocals that sound like they are wafting from the back of a vast room characterise this exquisitely beautiful pop. It’s spine-chillingly lovely. Listening to this dreamy melodic pop, and Mauro Remiddi’s distinctively evocative lyrics, you can’t help but be entranced, beguiled and swept into the most chilled of states all at once. This is a true delight.

(5) “Right Woman” – Dragonette

This infectiously bouncy piece of Canadian electro-pop, released as a musical anthology to make International Women’s Day 2012, Proud To Be a Woman vol. 3, is as catchy as it gets. It powers out the gate from the start, zips with a melodic drive worthy of a racing car into and out of the choruses, and leaving you delightfully gasping for breath. Danceable doesn’t begin to describe this clever new wave revivalist pop!

So what songs have grabbed you by the short and curlies and won’t let go?
