Quirk and drama go together more easily than you might expect.

These two trailers prove that you can be both narratively dramatic and quirkily upbeat and still live to tell a wholly engaging and meaningful cinematic story.

Because when you think about people are a mass of burbling contradictions which can lead to brilliance and strangeness simultaneously, and that spectrum of the intense and the lighthearted should appear together on film because it’s present in real life.

So off to the cinema with you to indulge the weird and wise parts of you …

Why did the world suddenly treat stuffed animals like gold? Ty Warner (Galifianakis) was a frustrated toy salesman until his collaboration with three women grew his masterstroke of an idea into the biggest toy craze in history. The Beanie Bubble is an inventive story about what and who we value, and the unsung heroes whose names didn’t appear on the heart-shaped tag. The Beanie Bubble is co-directed by American filmmakers Kristin Gore (screenwriter on Futurama, War Story, Accidental Love) & Damian Kulash, Jr. (music videos for OK Go) both making their feature directorial debut with this project. The screenplay is written by Kristin Gore. Produced by Brian Grazer, Ron Howard, and Karen Lunder. (courtesy First Showing)

Michelle Savill’s Berlinale and SXSW selection, Millie Lies Low, following an architecture student from New Zealand whose impulsive decision to deboard a plane to New York leads her on a peculiar new path, straddles the line “between the chaotic self-destruction of Fleabag & the anxious missteps of Eighth Grade” while making your “skin-crawl in new ways.” Millie Lies Low is directed by the New Zealander filmmaker Michelle Savill, making her feature directorial debut after a number of other short films previously. The screenplay is co-written by Eli Kent and Michelle Savill. This initially premiered at the 2022 Berlin & SXSW Film Festivals a few years ago. (courtesy
